Plants and Gardens for This Year

We ended last year on the Blog with the last gardening competition of 2013, held on unusual dates for this type of event, the SpeedGardening Competition held in Olot. And to begin 2014 we set ourselves the usual resolutions of this time at the beginning of a new year, among them we highlight: continuing to talk about Mediterranean plants and species for sustainable gardening, presenting the latest news from the Nursery, as well as other relevant news for the sector.

But we would also like to present you with a brief calendar of gardening events and festivals that we will try to follow up on to some extent. Both to inform you of the latest news and trends in this area of the sector, and to be able to analyze and enjoy the use of vegetation in this type of gardens, where designs and the use of vegetation are taken to extreme situations, unusual in conventional gardens.

Among these events, at the Peninsula level, as in previous years, the International Festivals of Ponte de Lima and Allariz stand out. In both, the selection of submitted proposals has already been carried out. And the participants are developing their projects to begin construction soon and open their doors to the public, in both cases, in May.

At the international level we start with the best known and most recognized, the Chelsea Flower Show which will take place from May 20 to 24 in London. For which, if you want to attend, you should not delay too long in booking your tickets, as they tend to sell out many months before it starts.

But this year, we must highlight the Lausanne Jardins 2014 festival, mainly because this event is held only every four years. And in this edition of the Festival, proposals with a strong experimental character have been selected, which take the traditional concepts of gardening and horticulture towards new challenges and possibilities. In this event, which will be held from June to October in the Swiss city of Lausanne, it will be interesting to see how the numerous interventions develop that will be distributed throughout different places in the center of this city located at the foot of Lake Léman and which we will try to follow closely.

Finally, to broaden the vision of garden festivals and follow the news in the international context, we have considered doing some follow-up of this type of events on other continents, based mainly on two events, perhaps little known in our country, but which will surely bring us interesting proposals and varied ways of facing this type of challenges in competitive gardening, such as:

The Singapore Garden Festival which will be held in August and which is the garden festival with the greatest prestige and recognition on the Asian continent.

And the Philadelphia Flower Show which is presented under the motto “where art meets horticulture” and which will take place in this American city during March.

From here, Viveros Sala Graupera takes the opportunity to wish you a happy and prosperous 2014, with more plants in our lives and more green in our environment.
