In this new article this week we will talk about some very useful species if we are looking for a shade planting.

More and more people are coming to our nursery interested in shade plants. And little by little we have been expanding the variety of shade-tolerant species. Today we will focus on one particular genus, Liriope.

The genus Liriope comes from Japan, grouping plants of the Asparagaceae family. At Sala Graupera nursery we have six species, each with some special peculiarity that makes it different from the others. We can find _Liriope _‘Isabella’, _Liriope muscari _‘Big Blue’, _Liriope muscari _‘Gold Banded’, Liriope muscari ‘Monroe White’,_ Liriope muscari_ ‘Silvery Sunproof’ and _Liriope muscari _‘Variegata’.

For example, _Liriope muscari _‘Big Blue’ is one of the most requested. It is a Liriope that reaches 30 or 35 centimeters high by 20 or 30 wide. Like all Liriope it is a plant with evergreen leaves of elongated and lanceolate form, in this case of dark green color. It flowers during the months of July to September with flowers grouped in spike of purple-bluish color.

It is a species belonging to hardiness zone number 7, with an average minimum annual temperature range of -17.7 / -12.3°C, showing resistance to severe frosts.

_Liriope muscari _‘Big Blue’ is drought resistant but prefers the occasional watering, especially during summer, when transpiration is greater. As mentioned above, it is a shade plant but can tolerate light sun.

It can be planted in any type of soil, it likes fresh soils with some moisture.

Like all *Liriope *it is used for planting under trees, to delimit paths, or for shade areas of our garden. They can also be used in vertical gardening, completely covering walls in a few months.

Another Liriope that we can find at Sala Graupera is _Liriope muscari _‘Variegata’, in this case we would have similar characteristics to the Liriope mentioned above but its leaves are green on the inside and a yellowish white tone all around the edge, giving a very interesting touch of color for shade areas, which are usually very dull in terms of color.

In this case its flowering is of a lighter lilac tone than the ‘Big Blue’.

We recommend that you come visit our shade greenhouse where you will find all these species that can be useful for landscaping your shade areas.
